State of the DCU
So, James Gunn is now one of the two new pilots of the DC comics film and TV universe (along with Peter Safran). And he has announced the first slate of projects. Great.
So before I break this whole thing down, let me say I was pleased to hear Gunn was taking over the reigns and try to steer the DCU towards a continuity that made sense. I, for a long time, said that is what they should do and model it(somewhat) ater the MCU. I mean, it's a formula that WORKS, why not do it!
Fans were excited. Then the hammer fell. No more Cavil, Affleck or Godot. But strangely, they are keeping Momoa and Miller(WHY?), and then the hate came. Cavil is a fan favorite and he is a known geek, so he is 'one of us'. But he wasn't keeping the big 3, instead, recasting will commence. Ugh, really? Oh, it gets worse...he is keeping The Suicide Squad and The Peacemaker...why? They are HIS creations. I said that was stupid and selfish. And then he said that he expected the hate and that those who didn't like it, well, they didn't matter. They are FANS man. If you don't listen to the fandom(even a little bit) they won't be fans much longer. So now he has a LOT to prove to get those people back.
The slate: Creature Commandos. So a creature filled Suicide Squad?
Waller. A show with a character willing to kill other characters. Yeah great move there.
Superman Legacy. No idea, but I reckon they will kill off Kal-El and replace him with someone Gunn likes.
Lanterns. The Green Lantern Corps humans solving crimes on Earth.
The Authority. I heard this and thought of The Boys.
Paradise Lost. So. Wonder Women. No Diana. Great(sarcasm)
The Brave and the Bold. Batman and Damian Wayne...well Damien specific. That little brat?
Booster Gold. A fake hero from the future with an ego problem.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. A dark take on Supergirl? She will SLAY people.
Swamp Thing. Horror. Was done on TV and it was good, but was not fully backed by the studio and was cancelled before ONE episode aired.
As for the stuff already made: Aquaman 2, The Flash and Shazam are already finished and will be released. He stated that The Flash film will set-up his 'universe". And he plans on keeping Miller? Not knocking second chances, but Miller's apologies are not even hearted. He is doing what he is told because his career is over unless he does it. Selfish, yes.
Aquaman 2 will be released because it will make money. I wasn't fond of the first one, so....
Shazam: Fury of the Gods should make some money, but after that the storyline ends in Gunn's new order.
Of all the things coming up in the next few years the only things I might consider or even watch is the sequels to Joker and The Batman, and perhaps Shazam 2. The CW stuff has been a wreck for years, so no loss there. All the stuff he announced left me with a big...Meh. No building towards a real Justice League film. Just a lot of nothings coming together to build a nothing. But he is keeping HIS toys. SO screw what the fans think.
Is Gunn steering the DCU in the right direction? From a continuity way, yes. By rejecting the fans(or even considering them) opinions, will that harm the future he is planning? Depends on how he presents the shows stated and the next wave. The first set is lackluster to say the least. Casting will be HUGE to get people back on board. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed, but it doesn't matter anyways. He will be praised by his fellow actors and those types.
Do I hope he succeeds? Of course, just don't diss your paying fans! And is there a main goal? Or just a bunch of little groups like Suicide Squad? And if you don't like a character you can kill them off(just like in SS film!) This is a semi-slippery slope he is on. Remember, one man's vision doesn't always guarantee success(Taiko Watiti....what a shite show) or longevity.
In all honesty I think the superhero film genre is saturated. Marvel keeps pumping out films and TV shows and it has become stale with a few bright spots. The one show that really stands out is The Boys. Not the normal superhero quip. Don't go that way James. It's being done better already.
And what about Margot Robbie?
